On 14th April, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck the Yushu County, in Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province and resulted in devastating damage. HELP initiated an emergent fund-raising and worked closely with several collborative organizations in Sichuan and Qinghai to support victims in Yushu. By the end of May, HELP has received generous donations of $4106.77 from 22 donors (equals RMB 27987.64, based on most recent exchange rate of 6.815 RMB/US $).
HELP worked with Wolong National Nature Reserve to collect over 380 tents (including 300 standard 3m by 4m disaster relief tents) and had them shipped to Yushu in late April (with total tranportation cost of RMB 23490). All tents have been distributed by HELP’s Yushu collborator FFI-China (Fauna and Flora International) to local households with the most urgent needs. Details of the tent delivery and distribution can be found here.
HELP has transferred the rest of the donation, RMB 4497.64, to FFI-China. This fund has been used to support the purchasing and delivery of 300 kilograms of Tibetan pastry margerine for earthquake victims in Shanglaxiu Town, where FFI has been conducting community-based grassland conservation projects for years.
Big thanks to the generous donors and hard-working collaborators and best wishes to the people inYushu from all HELPers!
